Planet Goalie Analysis:The Bauer 2011 line is a first for Bauer Goalie. The 2011 line is the culmination of having a top designer - Greg Goyer and a top manufacture - JRZ designing and building the Bauer Pro line. Greg and JRZ have long been established as two of the top individuals in the goalie categorey. The design and performance of these pro products is top notch and Planet Goalie expects Bauer to be a major force in the goalie category for years to come.
The RX10 Limited Edition Pad is a hybrid style pad the incorporates a flat shin with traditional knee rolls. The knee rolls had an element of craftmenship that is needed for a true hybrid style pad. The backside of this pad has a great amount of detail and features. A fully adjustable knee and shin cradle allow goalies the ability to add and remove features without damaging the integrity of the pad.
Bauer used a regulated flex system in this pad which means that the goalie can pick from four options on the flex of the pad. The soft flex has three breaks in the pad - top of the knee, bottom of the knee and center of the knee. This is a great option for the goalie with a narrow butterfly.
The mid flex has two variations, one is having a break only at the top of the knee, the other variation is having a break only at the bottom of the knee. The top of the knee break is a good option for a goalie who has a normal butterfly but just needs a little extra flex at the very top to close the five hole completely. The below the knee flex is popular with the goalie who is looking for the "s" shape in their pad but chooses to play in more of the JS Giguere style of using the internal part of the knee to make five hole saves in tight. On shots from out high, the goalie will use a wide butterfly to make a save and for shots in tight the goalie will use the internal knee protection to make saves.
The last regulated flex is the hard or stiff flex with no break. This is generally for your taller goalies with a very wide butterfly. These goalies generally have larger pads and combined with their wide butterfly, having any break could cause the thigh rise to be too soft and allow shots to push through the five hole, creating bad goals against.
The RX10 Limited Edition Pad has a sublimated pin-stripe that runs through the graphic of the pad. This gives the graphic a special and unique look, different then any pad on the market today.
